Funereal down-tuned sludge with thunderous arrhythmic drums gives way to expansive soundscapes of field recordings, political speeches, and meandering ambient guitar lines. This album is both a catharsis and a sonic portrayal of the anxious unrest and despair of the year 2020, when the quarantined cities of the USA's west coast were roiled with protests, wildfires, and a draconian siege by federal law enforcement. A variety of microtonal tunings are used to create cacophonous pulsating discords, disorienting atonal melodies, and stark walls of fuzz-drenched near-JI harmony. More aggressive, engaging, and deliberate than "ASMR", but far slower, looser and less layered than "UNFERTILE", it's a step toward unifying the opposing poles of prog and sludge that divide the Cryptic Ruse catalog.
